Gum diseases are usually painless and arise due to an inflammation of the gum or development of plaque on teeth. If you have swollen or bleeding gums or you lose teeth, schedule an appointment at Dr. Caminschi Dental Office. We provide comprehensive gum disease therapy in Mississauga and help you achieve a healthy smile for life.
Stages of Gum Disease
Healthy teeth: Healthy teeth are surrounded by an ample amount of gum tissues that help in giving protection and necessary support. They don’t bleed while brushing or flossing, are not affected by sensitivity, don’t swell or pain and don’t have periodontal pockets as the gum tissue surrounding them is bonded.
Gingivitis: This is an early stage of gum disease caused due to plaque build-up on teeth. Bleeding, redness and swelling of the gums are some of the signs of Gingivitis.
Periodontitis: Periodontitis is an advanced stage of gum disease that occurs if gingivitis isn’t treated and the gums begin to form a pocket below the gum line. These spaces are called periodontal pockets and aid to the growth of plaque and infection. Signs of periodontitis include swelling, bleeding and receding gums with bad breath, a bad taste and tooth loss.
At the early stages of periodontal disease, Dr. Caminschi recommends deep cleaning to remove the hardened plaque and infected tissue, and smoothing the damaged root surfaces of the teeth. This process helps in healing the gums. An antibiotic rinse is then applied to help in controlling the infection. We also advice our patients to maintain a regular brushing and flossing schedule after the deep cleaning procedure. This avoids the plaque from building up again.
Laser-assisted Periodontal Therapy
In case of advanced periodontitis, our dentist performs dental laser therapy to remove the periodontal pockets from the gum line. Biolase’s Waterlase dental laser selectively removes the infected tissues and destroys the microbes around the gums and teeth. Laser therapy is an efficient, painless and faster gum disease therapy that speeds up the healing process.
